Santa Barbara County Braces for Excessive Heat, Increased Risk of Wildfire

The National Weather Service said Phoenix broke its daily heat record for July 23 after recording a high temperature of 115 degrees on Monday.

A cool front pushed its way through North Texas, but did little to alter the triple digit temperatures.

The weather service said other record highs set Tuesday included 122 (50 Celsius) in Thermal, in California's Coachella Valley, and 121 (49.4 Celsius) in Palm Springs.

Forecasters issued excessive heat warnings to much of Arizona, including parts of Grand Canyon National Park, and extended into areas of Southern California and Nevada.

Neighboring Indio hit 118, tying a record set in 2006, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service said the warning for Utah's Dixie and Lake Powell regions will be in effect Tuesday through Thursday.

High temperatures are expected to range anywhere from 96 to 98 degrees in Escondido and El Cajon Monday, and Vista was expected to see temperatures as high as 88.

Record heat has settled deep in the heart of Texas as temperatures in some Central Texas cities set all-time record highs.

Forecasters say monsoon moisture will return to the Phoenix area from the east by the weekend.

"When temperatures are high, even a few hours of exertion may cause severe dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke".

Authorities urge the public to avoid potential health hazards resulting from the extreme heat by drinking plenty of non-alcoholic fluids, seeking out shady and/or air-conditioned environments and checking up on relatives and neighbors to make sure they are handling the heat all right.

In addition, young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles during hot weather, when auto interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes, officials warn.

"Nationwide, heat is the #1 heat-related killer", the weather service in Phoenix said on its website.

Maricopa County public health officials say 155 people died in the Phoenix area past year from heat-caused illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Spokeswoman Jeanene Fowler said Tuesday there have been five confirmed heat-associated deaths in Maricopa County this year, with the cause of another 34 deaths still under investigation.

The high ranking comes after lightning sparked the first wildfire of the season near Yellowstone.
