The Manchester City forward was chastised over missed chances despite the Three Lions reaching the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic has identified Raheem Sterling as England's danger man in the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Sterling has found his performances being placed under the microscope arguably more than any other England player by certain publications.

"I think Raheem has been fundamental to the way we have played - his movement, the positions he takes up, his pressing of the ball, his work rate for the team, the winning of free-kicks, the winning of corners, his speed to stretch teams", Southgate told the ITV World Cup podcast.

"He was a constant threat to Sweden".

However, the England manager is hesitant to change what has been a winning formula in Russian Federation and Sterling is odds on to retain his place in the lineup when the Three Lions take on Croatia in the semi-final on Wednesday night.

Some more hysterical commentators even called for him to be dropped from the squad.

'Raz, he's a nightmare for us defenders, ' said the defender.

Midfielder Eric Dier says that England and Tottenham Hotspur teammate Kieran Trippier deserves the recognition that he has received for his recent performances.

"It's so clear to see if you were to watch back until now the importance he has on the team".

'I'm a big Vardy fan, I think he would have scored a couple against Sweden'.

And Dier feels Sterling's handling of the whole situation has been nothing short of "incredible", before going on to laud his team-mate's World Cup performances.

Raheem Sterling would be playing for Exeter City instead of England if he didn't have pace, according to Vinnie Jones.

"I think Raheem Sterling is an important player because he is really fast and his combination with Harry Kane is really risky".
