Emil Forsberg ousts Switzerland and sends Sweden into World Cup last eight

When Forsberg did score, in the 66th minute, his goal was a hugely deserved one.

The first meeting between the nations at a major tournament simmered in the St Petersburg sunshine until Forsberg's fortunate strike handed Sweden a crucial lead.

Stephan Lichtsteiner will miss Switzerland's World Cup Round of 16 clash with Sweden after picking up two yellow cards in the group stages.

- Sweden kept their third clean sheet in four games at the 2018 World Cup - as many shutouts as they'd recorded in their previous 24 matches combined at the World Cup finals.

But Forsberg arrived in Russian Federation shouldering the creative burden left by Ibrahimovic following his retirement two years ago, and the attacking midfielder's skills and slick movement stood out at St Petersburg Stadium.

"So very unfortunate, very lucky for Sweden, they scored the goal, winning the game on that and now in the in the quarter-finals".

Seehofer’s last-ditch attempt to agree on migration issue
Alexander Dobrindt, leader of the CSU parliamentary group, said "a common destiny proves its worth only when it is challenged". However, Italy - where most irregular migrants arrive - does not want to take back migrants who reach Germany.

Sweden were given a late penalty when Michael Lang was sent off for bringing down Martin Olsson when through on goal, but after consulting VAR the foul was judged to be outside the area and a free-kick awarded instead.

This was far from a classic at the Saint Petersburg Stadium and if Colombia or England's players were watching on from Moscow, they could be forgiven for feeling bullish about their prospects in the last eight. The referee initially awarded a penalty kick but later gave a free kick on the edge of the area after a video review.

Marcus Berg forced a fine save from Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer in the 27th minute, and Albin Ekdal squandered an excellent chance when he volleyed over the bar from 12 metres out after getting on the end of a cross from Mikael Lustig. Their long balls forward caused panic and they were more bullish in their tackling in midfield.

The team will have Sebastian Larsson back from a ban, however, and the holding midfielder should go straight back into the starting lineup.

Forsberg then struck 16 minutes into the second half.

Blerim Dzemaili blazed over at the other end to waste a rare sight of goal for Switzerland, who had developed a reputation as second-half specialists at this year's tournament.
