The ANF in 2011 had registered another case against former federal minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin; Ali Musa Gilani, son of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani; and others for alleged misuse of 9,000kg ephedrine, which is still pending before the CNS court of Islamabad.

Mr Abbasi was contesting election against Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid from NA-60, Rawalpindi and the PML-N did not have a covering candidate in the constituency.

Announcing the verdict after six years at a time when the general elections are just around the corner, the court ordered to seize assets of the accused in the verdict, consequently, disqualified the PML-N leader from contesting the upcoming general elections from NA-60 Rawalpindi. He was reportedly shifted to Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, where ousted premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter, and son-in-law are also imprisoned.

On the other hand, seven other accused in ephedrine case have been acquitted by the court. "I will challenge the verdict in the high court".

Strict security arrangements were made at the court with the deployment of a large a large numbers of police officials.

The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) officials later arrested Abbasi from the court premises.

Earlier today, the court had reserved the verdict in ephedrine quota case against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi.

The case trial has been ongoing in a CNS Court in Rawalpindi. However, the decision will be announced shortly.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had dismissed Hanif Abbasi's petition against the LHC order directing to conclude the ephedrine quota case against him by July 21.

Lawyer Kamran Murtaza told that LHC had announced verdict on an irrelevant plea and that his client has never asked for delay in the case.

PML-N workers and supporter were also present in the court area in large number started protesting at the court's central gate after the announcement of the verdict.
