BREAKING: Gas EXPLOSION completely destroys buildings in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, USA

Mahlon Mitchell, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin, identified the firefighter who was killed as Cory Barr.

Sun Prairie Police Lieutenant Kevin Konopacki said Barr's work, and the work of countless other firefighters, helped save the lives of many Sun Prairie residents.

One firefighter has died and another was critically injured in a gas explosion and fire that leveled several buildings in downtown Sun Prairie.

The explosion happened on Tuesday around 6:20 p.m.at the intersection of Main and Bristol Streets after police were called to the area for a gas leak.

The Red Cross assisted evacuees at a shelter set up at Sun Prairie High School.

This update has been corrected to show the explosion happened Tuesday, not Monday.

Fact-checking Trump's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation news conference
Trump did not specify which countries had committed to what, and it remained unclear whether any had changed their plans. Trump said he had a "very, very good relationship" with Merkel, who described the two as "good partners".

WE Energies spokeswoman Amy Jahns said workers for a private contractor punctured a 4-inch gas main, causing a leak that resulted in the explosion that rained debris around the downtown area and ignited vehicles parked in the area. She said the utility's first responders were in the area working to shut off the flow of gas and make the area safe.

A member of the Sheriff's Department says there are no fatalities to report at this time. He had no other details.

People who live in the town of Sun-Prairie, a suburb of Madison, said they could smell the gas and see the smoke for miles.

Sun Prairie Fire Chief Christopher Garrison told the Associated Press that the department is grieving over Barr's death.

Andy Gay, a WMTV employee, said: "Our whole house shook". It sent a plume of smoke and flames into the air.

Firefighters from Sun Prairie and surrounding communities responded to the scene. Police blocked off downtown streets from traffic and onlookers.
