"He was by far the best sparring partner I had in the last couple of weeks", the 31-year-old added after being pictured hitting balls with Stefan on the practice courts earlier in the tournament.

"I never knew that I was tested so much more than everyone else", Williams said.

She's played in four tournaments in 2018, most recently at Wimbledon, in which she fell in the final to Angelique Kerber. Discrimination? I think so.

Williams addressed the issue at a press conference ahead of Wimbledon after it was revealed the American was unhappy when a tester refused to leave her house having turned up for a random test outside of the 23-time grand slam champion's allotted hour. Williams, 36 and showing no signs of decline after reaching the Wimbledon final, has been given a wild card to compete in next month's Rogers Cup in Montreal ahead of the US Open.

The 23-times Grand Slam singles victor, who gave birth last September and lost in the Wimbledon final 10 days ago, has not competed in Montreal since her run to the semi-finals in 2014 and last played the Rogers Cup in Toronto the following year.

"We are, of course, very pleased to be able to announce the participation of Serena Williams as we have awarded her a wild card", said Eugène Lapierre, Tournament Director of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank. "She has always been a fighter and she is proving it once again".
