A fire or possible explosion has taken place outside the USA embassy in Beijing amid reports a woman was detained after spraying herself with petrol.

The ruling Communist Party newspaper Global Times said police "took away a woman spraying gasoline on herself in suspected attempt at self-immolation" at around 11 a.m.

Witnesses posted images on Twitter of smoke surrounding the building.

An explosion was heard outside the United States Embassy in Beijing on Thursday, Chinese media reported, citing social media reports and eyewitnesses' accounts.

The US embassy has heavy security measures, including a bulletproof glass wall.
