Former Malaysian premier Najib to be charged Wednesday in graft probe

One of the sources said Najib was expected to be charged in court on Wednesday.

A Najib spokesman did not immediately have a comment.

The former leader is being investigated over allegations that billions of dollars were looted from 1MDB, a state fund he founded in 2009.

Since a shock election loss to his mentor-turned-foe Mahathir Mohamad in May, Najib has been barred from leaving the country and had millions of dollars of items seized from properties linked to him as part of the probe into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Bernama cites the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) which has been investigating billions of state funds that went missing while Najib was in power.

Mahathir also said last month that there was an "almost perfect" case against Najib's role in the 1MDB scandal.

Sources close to the 1MDB probe when contacted by theSun today confirmed that the 48-year-old movie producer and co-founder of Los Angeles-based film production company Red Granite Pictures was issued a notice to show up for questioning at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya early on Tuesday. Riza was solemn as he arrived at the anti-graft office and didn't speak to reporters.

Red Granite agreed in March to pay the USA government $60m to settle claims it benefited from the 1MDB scandal.

Civil lawsuits filed by the U.S. Department of Justice allege that almost $4.5 billion from 1MDB was laundered through a complex web of transactions and shell companies. They say hundreds of millions from 1MDB landed in Najib's bank accounts. It said the accounts, belonging to 81 people and 55 companies, are thought to have received funds from 1MDB between 2011 and 2015.
