Francesco Molinari triumphs in Italy's first ever British Open win

He became the first major victor since Steve Elkington won the PGA Championship in 1995 to play the final 36 holes without a single score over par.

Woods held the outright lead at Carnoustie heading into his back nine, as he looked to end his decade-long major drought, but dropped three shots in two holes and he never regained the momentum.

'I'm a little ticked off at myself for sure, ' Woods told Sky Sports.

All around him on a windy summer day on the links of Carnoustie, the leaders were imploding as Tiger Woods moved into the lead at the turn.

"I would love for him to get back to where he was a few years ago", he said. I thought 9 [under] would be the number. His second shot came into the green with no spin and kicked hard, racing well past the desired 14 hole and finishing closer to the 4 hole on the double-green complex, about 50 yards from the flag.

Now Molinari owns the lowest score (276) in an Open Championship at Carnoustie.

"I can't find the words right now, but one picture would do it..." he tweeted in both English and Italian, attaching a picture of little brother Francesco pumping his fist after winning the British Open.

"It was a lovely morning to play golf", said early-starter Rose after producing the lowest score of the week.

Celebrities defend 'Guardians of the Galaxy' director James Gunn after sudden firing
Who will cowardly distance themselves from you? "This was a #cybernazi attack that succeeded", the actor tweeted. Their co-star Dave Bautista leaped to Gunn's defense on Friday after he was sacked by Walt Disney Studios.

India's promising young golfer Shubhankar Sharma said making the cut was the best possible birthday present he could have wished for.

Molinari, the world No.15, kept his nerve in sun-baked but breezy conditions on Scotland's east coast to fire a round of 69 to finish eight under.

Francesco Molinari emerged on top to claim victory, while Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele each tied second. So, it wasn't easy at the beginning, but I stuck with it and tried to make it work. Even playing with Tiger Woods - the same man who'd handed him the Quicken Loans trophy - wasn't going to shake him. 11 and 12, where his double bogey-bogey combination elbowed him aside. Yesterday I hit driver, 5 iron, which is more the Carnoustie 18th hole that we know.

Asked if Spieth felt he and his rivals would now be dealing with Woods's name hovering on leaderboards for a number of years to come, the three-times major victor replied: "I think so, yeah".

However, the 42-year-old 14-time major victor had his rivals rattled when he grabbed the lead thanks to two birdies on the front nine while they were dropping shots.

Between them, Schauffele, Kisner and Chappell had played in just six Open Championships and it felt like that may have been the difference as bunkers were found with regularity and drives ran through fairways. He also tied for fourth at that year's Masters. Molinari was playing better than anyone else in the world coming in to the event and he was officially ranked as the 15th best player in the world, so 11 of the last 14 winners have now ranked inside the world's top-30.

And just like the Woods of old, the players he was chasing started to collapse. He's experienced some bad injuries and two hand surgeries, but he's come back.
