ROMULUS, Mich- A 7-year-old girl was killed while attempting to cross eastbound I-94 in Romulus after police say she was seeking help for her father who was allegedly involved in a drunk driving crash early Sunday.

Emergency crews were called to I-94 in Romulus, Michigan around 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

"They say my daughter tried to save her father, she ran to get some help for her daddy", Sandria Burts told the station.

Dessandra's mother, Sandria Burts, told Fox 2 it took her 20 years to conceive her daughter after being told by doctors she could not have children of her own.

Dessandra Thomas was killed on the I-94 in Romulus, Michigan, Sunday, after her father lost control of his auto, struck another vehicle parked on the side of the road, and crashed into some fencing. "She was so helpful", she said.

DeSandra thought her father died when he crashed into an abandoned auto on the side of the freeway, so she used a cell phone to text message 911 but couldn't call.

Police said she was "killed instantly".

Uber didn't specify when the new features would be available, but an update is now rolling out in the Play Store. Drivers will receive a message so they know to look for, say, a yellow screen rather than a pink or green one.

The driver's daughter, a 7-year-old girl identified by WJBK as Dessandra Thomas, texted with police following the crash because her phone couldn't make calls. Officers said Thomas was struck and killed instantly.

The troopers then learned that the Romulus Police Department had been investigating a drunk driving crash that happened a short time earlier that morning.

Burts told WXYZ that she has forgiven the girl's father.

The girl's father was allegedly driving drunk when he crashed the vehicle they were in. A poor lady that was driving down 94, that will have to live with the fact that she struck a child for the rest of her life, ' Shaw said. "Now ... you have a father who is in jail and just lost his daughter".

"Here's a 7-year-old girl that's not going to go to prom", he said. "I want him to be able to talk to people, because you never know how many lives he'll be able to save by telling his story".

Authorities say they don't plan to charge the driver who accidentally hit DeSandra but charges against her father are pending.
