A woman was shot and killed when a gunman ran into a busy Los Angeles supermarket where he held dozens of people hostage for about three hours Saturday before handcuffing himself and surrendering to police.

Outside the store, the man exchanged gunfire with police again and the woman was shot and killed, Moore said. Albert Corado first Tweeted that his sister worked at the Trader Joe's and that the family could not contact her, but later confirmed she was the shooting victim.

After shooting his grandmother and his girlfriend at about 1:30 Saturday afternoon, Atkins forced his wounded girlfriend into his grandsmother's auto and sped across the Midcity of Los Angeles. Lopez says the suspect shot multiple rounds at officers during the chase but no officers were struck. The chase ended in a crash at the store in the Silver Lake area.

As the suspect exited the vehicle, he and police exchanged gunfire.

"There is an active police incident at the Trader Joe's near the intersection of Hyperion Ave and Griffith Park Blvd in #Silverlake". According to authorities, he was armed with a hand-gun.

Employees helped several people escape the store through windows with a rope ladder and through the rear of the building.

Moore said police were able to drag the injured woman to safety but she died at the scene.

Police are said to be in contact with the suspect and negotiating an end to the barricade which was still ongoing, LA NBC said.

Gene Evin Atkins is being held on a $2 million bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the Los Angeles Times reported on Sunday.

After reports of the domestic shooting, police used a theft-tracking device to find the suspect near Hollywood.

Closures: No word on when the Trader Joe's store #17 will reopen. It's unclear whether she was hit by officers or the suspect.

Police immediately surrounded the suspect, searched him and then brought him to a waiting ambulance. The city's police department was also put on tactical alert during the ordeal. Fire officials described her as a 20-year-old woman. Retweeting the president, the LAPD did not dispute his description of the incident as a "hostage situation", but the LAPD had not yet labeled it as such.

"We have successfully taken the suspect into custody without incident", Los Angeles police said on Twitter.

A 12-year-old boy, a 41-year-old woman, a 70- year-old woman and an 81-year-old woman were all hospitalized with minor injuries and listed in fair condition, she said. Three additional patients were evaluated and declined being take to hospitals.

The suspect eventually cuffed himself and surrendered to authorities, where he awaits formal charges.
