"My people came to me - [U.S. Director of National Intelligence] Dan Coats came to me and some others - and they said they think it's Russian Federation". If I was loud & vicious, I would have been criticized for being too tough.

There are hopes inside the administration that the next summit will be more traditional, with USA and Russian negotiators meeting ahead of time to set up an agenda and try to reach agreement on some issues.

"People wanted change. He's changing", Kaufman said of Trump.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday of the proposed Russian questioning, "That's not going to happen".

"There are some tech experts in Silicon Valley whom I have met who say that maybe what they will do this time is really disrupt the actual election", Clinton said onstage at OZY Fest. The official did not specify if that meant Russia's interference in US elections.

Though Trump has long signified a desire to have a strong relationship with Putin and often complimented the Russian leader, his administration has maintained support for Ukraine in its fight against the Russian-leaning separatists in the Donbass region.

Sanders said in a press briefing that topics discussed on Monday included, "Syrian humanitarian aid, Iran's nuclear ambition, Israeli security, North Korean denuclearization, Ukraine and the occupation of Crimea, reducing Russian and US nuclear arsenals, and of course, your favorite topic, Russia's interference in our elections". "And we are hearing crickets from the White House".

The Russian government has been somewhat more forthcoming.

Russia's Defense Ministry said it sent detailed proposals to Washington on organizing the return of more than 1.7 million refugees to Syria after agreements reached by Putin and Trump, RIA news agency said. He did not elaborate on what Putin's solutions would be.

Trump has faced sharp criticism from USA lawmakers - including key Republicans - and others who denounced his performance at a joint press conference with Putin following their Helsinki meeting.

"There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems. but they can ALL be solved!"

Mizintsev, speaking Friday in Moscow at a meeting of planners from the Defense and Foreign Ministries, said Russian Federation had already begun work on the ground in both areas but that worldwide help was needed.

Trump has caused confusion throughout the week with his back-and-forth statements on Russia's interference with the 2016 elections.

Earlier we reported that American President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the resolution of the crisis in Syria and also talked about the refugees.

Trump had praised the proposal on Monday as an "incredible offer" and Sanders later described it as an "interesting idea" that was being discussed internally.

President Trump faced widespread criticism from Republicans and Democrats following the Helsinki summit for appearing to disagree with United States intelligence chiefs that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 Presidential elections.
