Addressing a gathering of Iranian diplomats, Rouhani said: "Mr Trump, don't play with the lion's tail, this would only lead to regret", the state new agency IRNA reported.

"You are not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran's security and interests", Rouhani said, in an apparent reference to reported efforts by Washington to destabilize Iran's Islamic government.

After the USA pulled out of the nuclear agreement, Iran made clear that it wants to keep the deal alive, but only if the remaining five powers can guarantee that Iran will not face economic isolation under the sanctions that the US has started to revive. During a recent tour, a senior State Department official warned that those failing to reduce Iranian oil imports to "zero" by early November would face U.S. sanctions.

He also said by pulling out of the nuclear agreement, which Iran signed with six world powers in 2015, the USA tried in vain to drive Iran out of the deal in order to take the case to the UN Security Council.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had previously hinted that Tehran could shut the Strait of Hormuz - a strategic waterway that handles as much as 20 percent of the world's oil.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif last week questioned whether Europe has the will to continue with the current deal. "Or are they prepared to stand against this?"

"As I have previously said, we can not trust in the words of the United States and even in their signature, so negotiations with the United States are useless", Khamenei told a gathering of Iranian diplomats in Tehran.

Washington has "a fundamental problem with the nature of Iran's Islamic establishment", Khamenei asserted.

"Negotiations with the Europeans do not to stop; however, we should not linger, waiting for the European pack", said Khamenei.

"Of course the European sides [to the JCPOA] are obligated to provide necessary guarantees with regard to the JCPOA, but the country's economy must not be tied to this issue", the Leader stated in a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his cabinet in Tehran.

"Meanwhile, the numerous tasks that need to be carried out inside the country should be followed up", he added.
