Irish vote rejecting illegal Israeli settlements hailed

Israel Slams 'Immoral' Bill Passed by Ireland's Senate Outlawing Trade With West Bank Jewish Communities

Israel Slams 'Immoral' Bill Passed by Ireland's Senate Outlawing Trade With West Bank Jewish Communities

The campaign organisation Avaaz hailed the "unprecedented" vote and said: "Irish citizens, trade unions and civil society like Senator Black are determined to take advantage of this momentum for sanctions to become law".

She spoke with the paper after legislation that would make such trade punishable by jail time and a large monetary fine passed an important hurdle in the Irish Senate with a 25-20 vote. "The ongoing attacks on human rights in Palestine calls for a stronger response", said John Griffin, one of the Kinvara event organisers.

"The absurd in the Irish Senate's initiative is that it will harm the livelihoods of many Palestinians who work in the Israeli industrial zones affected by the boycott", he said. Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories are illegal under global law.

Legally, he said the Bill was in contravention of European Union law which did not permit a nation-state to take action on global trade which was out with European Union policy, which sets trade policies between all European Union states and the rest of the world.

"I would like to make use of this occasion to thank everyone that was involved in the approval of this law, from political parties to Palestinian and Irish civil society, and particularly to Senator Frances Black for her courage to introduce this motion that advances the cause of justice in Palestine", Erekat concluded. And just a week later, Fianna Fail (Warriors of Fal), the second-largest party in the Irish parliament, declared that it was going to back the bill, raising hopes among Palestine supporters in Ireland that it would indeed pass.

Ireland imports a number of agricultural and cosmetic settlement products, including those produced by Ahava. Recognising this, Egan said that "Fine Gael's sole opposition to this Bill is an embarrassment".

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney spoke against the bill during the debate at the Senate, known as the Seanad Éireann.

Some parents held their hands together in a traditional Thai wai gesture of thanks, while others hugged and embraced the heroes. British divers Richard Stanton, left, and John Volanthen at the base camp for the rescue operation last week.

Kelly stressed at that meeting that the initiative had been sponsored by independent representatives in the Irish Senate and was opposed by the Irish government, but also that the proposed legislation was not a BDS initiative and that the Irish government is opposed to BDS. "The bill is focused [solely] on the sale of products from settlements and not on trade within the Green Line".

"If an engineer in Apple's Herzliya office lives in Jerusalem and telecommutes from home for a day, will Apple be at risk of providing a settlement service in violation of Irish law?"

Proponents of the measure argued Israel is profiting from its illegal settlements in the Palestinian territories and the stalled peace process shows no signs of yielding a resolution.

Kinvara has a tradition of supporting the Palestinian people. The Irish no longer viewed Israel as the underdog struggling for national rights, but instead as a foreign occupier on someone else's land (the Palestinians), similar to the Irish experience with British control over Northern Ireland.

As such, Kittrie believes that Israel needs to do a better job in improving the country's image in Ireland.

"Once again, Ireland is making history and leading the way in its solidarity with the Palestinian people", she continued.
