Joaquin Phoenix is The Joker in the new origin movie

This week it was announced that Joaquin Phoenix will officially star in a Todd Phillips-directed Joker origin movie that will work outside of the DC Universe and explore "a man disregarded by society".

The Joker film in question was first reported almost a year ago, and will be co-written and directed by The Hangover's Todd Phillips.

Phoenix went in depth about his process when the possibility of doing this movie and taking on an iconic role like The Joker presented itself.

"T$3 here is something very appealing about... working with [Todd Phillips] on this particular project. It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways and maybe, mostly, it scares the fucking shit out of me or something", Phoenix added. For more detail, you can check out the actor's full comments over at Collider.

Joaquin also revealed he's been thinking about appearing a movie like this for a number of years.

'I wouldn't quite classify this as like any genre. I think he's very impressive and he seems to have a very interesting understanding of this world and what he's trying to say. It's an opportunity for Warner Bros.to use one of its most recognizable DC Comics heroes on a smaller scale and with a grittier tone, and landing an actor like Phoenix to lead such a film is a huge win for the studio. That's because over his brilliant career, Joaquin Phoenix has delivered a number of exceptional performances that repeatedly demonstrate his ability to transform into the character he's playing.

'US to become global leading producer of crude oil'
Venezuela's production has collapsed due to a lack of investment and Iranian exports have suffered due to USA sanctions. Yesterday, we wrote that a strike in a Shell-operated oil field in Norway helped drive Brent crude oil prices higher.

No release date for The Joker movie is set at this time. Why another Joker movie when the greatest appeal of the character is his mystery?

"So I was trying to think of other characters, and he said 'I'll set up a general meeting with Warner Bros.' And I said 'I'm not gonna go, I can't go to a general meeting, '" Phoenix continued.

"It's a magnified version of what you deal with as an actor". He finds Phillips' want to dive into the "real life struggles" of comic characters that is often left unexposed in the film, and that he always felt these comic characters deserved to be studied and that Phillips finds this idea "appealing".

"Three or four years ago, I called my agent and said 'Why don't they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?'" Phoenix said. Whether it be politics, the environment, Star Wars movies, or nearly any subject out there, you have people arguing about it online and in public, and it can get uncomfortable really fast.

Are you excited to see what Phoenix brings to this larger-than-life role? Phoenix recently sat down with Collider to discuss the film and his feelings on the role.
