Joaquin Phoenix’s darker, grittier Joker movie officially in the works

The three-time Oscar nominee has some big shoes to fill, following fan-adored interpretations of Batman's arch nemesis from Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Cesar Romero and even Mark Hamill's animated version.

Studio bosses describe the plotline as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society (that) is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale".

$55 million is not very much for a film that will be part of a superhero franchise, possibly leading to something quite interesting with the finished product.

Todd Phillips' Joker origins feature has been officially greenlit by Warner Bros. and will go before the cameras in September. Under new leadership, Warner Bros.is reportedly moving away from announcing a slew of superhero release dates far in advance, which some thought crippled the launch of the DCEU with rushed productions.

Whatever the case may be, Phoenix is one of the finest actors of his generation and watching him portray the gradual descent of a normal man into the deranged mind of the Joker will be fascinating.

Joaquin Phoenix is set to star as The Joker in an upcoming origin movie about the iconic villain. "I think it's cool when people do that", he added.

Phoenix is not the only A-lister playing the Clown Prince of Crime either; Jared Leto is also preparing to revisit his interpretation, last seen - albeit fleetingly - in 2016's Suicide Squad. That we're confident about.
