England will face Colombia on Tuesday night at the Spartak Stadium, with the victor facing Sweden or Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Sweden will play Switzerland in St. Petersburg earlier the same day.

Rashford, though, says that he and his team-mates have been practising, with previous England teams crashing out of the World Cup on penalties in 1998 and 2006.

Lingard can not wait for the match and believes a bright future lies ahead under Southgate, who gave the attacking midfielder his debut on his first match in charge of the England team.

"We're not the favourites, we're playing against the country that invented football", said 32-year-old Espanyol midfielder Sanchez.

'No matter what round we're in, we're still going to play the same. "Colombia fear no one now".

Falcao (above) struggled at both United and Chelsea after a serious injury but has been resurgent since leaving these shores and Lingard said: '(He's) a great finisher.

"When it comes to the games we know we're going to be ready".

"For this team, this is a brilliant opportunity to go beyond where more experienced teams have before them", said Southgate in a press conference.

"(United manager Jose Mourinho) has got 20-25 players in the squad and he has to pick the best team to play each game.

Yet England's extensive preparations, which have been formally ongoing since March and have been a daily feature of their sessions at their Zelenogorsk base camp, have left him full of belief that he should be on Gareth Southgate's list of takers.

Marcus Rashford has never taken a first team penalty but has already let it be known that he wants to step up if England find themselves in a World Cup shootout.

England play Colombia on Tuesday at 7pm. Woodward takes issue with the selection policy of Southgate - although his Belgian counterpart Roberto Martinez also made sweeping changes - but is more staggered by another facet of the thinking behind the policy.

It is a mouth-watering opportunity for England's young squad after promising Group G wins against Tunisia and Panama, when performances as much as results helped bring about renewed positivity around the national team. "That gives the team the best chance". Nobody qualifying for the World Cup last 16 gets lucky.
