The Open Championship is back in sunny Scotland as Carnoustie hosts the 147th edition of the oldest major. "It's no big deal".

"I love TV and I am not going to stop doing it any time soon", said Chamblee, 56, who retired in 2003 to spend more time with his three children. "I mean, I imagine this is as easy as the course could play", he added.

The three-time Open champion, who competed in the event for the first time since 2015, downplayed its impact on the round but said his neck has "been bugging me for a while".

"I played better than what the score indicates because I had two 8-irons into both par 5s today, and I end up with par on both of those, " Woods said.

"He looks like a robot out there when I see him practice putting", said Sky Sports pundit Harmon. "But creativity plays such an important role".

So while Woods didn't seem openly pleased with his day, there's no question this was a strong performance and one which kept him firmly in the mix entering Friday's Round 2 tee time with Russell Knox and Hideki Matsuyama.

McIlroy, meanwhile, starts his round at 12:53pm.

World number one Dustin Johnson ran up a 76 that included a triple-bogey at the last, but Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy fared better with a 69.

The four-time major victor had three birdies and one bogey in his round, where he was one of the few players to use his driver regularly on the sun-baked course. I feel like my game is made for championship golf and I'm getting better each year and I know what to expect at this point of my career.

After surviving a final-day wobble to beat compatriot Matt Kuchar by three strokes past year, Spieth begins his defence of the Claret Jug at 9:58am, going out with England's Justin Rose and Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand.

Spieth was 3 under through 14 holes as he tried to become the first champion to repeat since Padraig Harrington won at Carnoustie in 2007 and again at Royal Birkdale the next year.

The notorious course is one of the very toughest to host The Open, all the more so when the wind blows in off the North Sea.

After a handsome summer day for Round 1, it's looking more like the notorious, overcast Scottish coast for Round 2. The fairways have slowed a bit but the course is still playing relatively firm for now.

He might be a little more chatty with playing partners and acknowledge the occasional kid wishing him well, but the rest of it looks just like it did before the first of four back procedures.
