However, Michael Carrick has now retired, there is speculation suggesting that Ander Herrera could be heading back to Spain while Marouane Fellaini is yet to sign a new contract so Mourinho is being tipped to sign another central midfielder this summer.

His new contract gives the option for a further season.

Fellaini is now on World Cup duty with Courtois in Russian Federation, and the Chelsea FC goalkeeper has talked up the important role the Manchester United midfielder plays.

"I am pleased to be continuing my journey as a Manchester United player", said Fellaini in a statement after his renewal was confirmed on Friday. "I made this decision because I am very happy here", Fellaini told United's official website. "Also, I feel like this team, under Jose, still has a lot we want to achieve", fellaini said.

Manchester United will be looking to challenge for the Premier League title next season as the Red Devils aim to try and lift the trophy for the first time since 2013.

"I think Jose Mourinho has figured out it's better to have in your team than against you".

Mourinho added "I am very happy Marouane is staying with us". His performances in Russian Federation along with Mourinho's desire to bring Fellaini back to Old Trafford were driving forces in his new two-year contract.

Fellaini will be in action with Belgium on Monday July 2 when they take on Japan in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Courtois has backed the 30-year-old midfielder though, and has endorsed him as a "useful" player on the pitch after a solid performance in the 1-0 win against Gareth Southgate's England on Thursday night, courtesy on a wonder strike from ex-Man United star Adnan Januzaj.
