Still, after two years of wrangling, their departures shatter May's own proclamation of cabinet unity last Friday in what she believed was an agreement on Britain's biggest foreign and trading policy shift in nearly half a century.

David Davis, who resigned on Sunday as UK Brexit minister, claimed in a stinging broadside on Monday that the government was giving away too much, too easily to the European Union.

In her statement to Parliament, May attempted to give an impression of business as usual, saying she would present a detailed paper onThursday on the government's negotiating position for a post-Brexit relationship with the EU.

To me, it looks like the buyers are buying the Brexit dips in anticipation of a rate hike and better economic news.

If Davis's resignation rattled May, Johnson's shook the foundations of her government. However, should she survive such a challenge, Conservative Party rules prevent her opponents from making another try to unseat her for at least a year.

May said the plan would deliver frictionless trade with Europe and was the "only way to avoid a hard border" between the U.K.'s Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland. Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

The resignations came just days after May announced she had finally united her quarrelsome government behind her plan for a divorce deal with the EU.

Mrs May appointed junior minister Dominic Raab, a former diplomat who was a prominent campaigner for Leave in the 2016 referendum, as Mr Davis's successor.

Less than nine months remain until Britain reduces the EU's membership on March 29, 2019.

Mr Davis said that his departure was not a prelude to him challenging the prime minister's position, but said it was "not for me to make other peoples' decisions" on whether to follow his lead and to leave the cabinet.

But her administration was thrown into disarray within 48 hours, as first Mr Davis and then Mr Johnson said that they could not commit themselves to promote the plans under the doctrine of collective responsibility.

"I'd have to deliver this".

A Tory leadership contest can be called in one of two ways - if May resigns or if MPs force and win a vote of no confidence in her. "However, there is a risk that were May to make further compromises in the negotiations with Brussels, more hard line Conservative MPs might be theoretically prepared to abstain or even vote against her in a no confidence vote in Parliament", he said.
