Microsoft reveals the $399 Surface Go

It measures 245 x 175 x 8.3 mm and weighs about 512 grams. But the biggest difference is the price: the Surface Go starts at £380 in the United Kingdom and $399 in the U.S., which is half the price of the cheapest Surface Pro tablet.

The smaller size has also forced a bit of compromise on battery life. If you're on a limited budget and trying to buy both a tablet and a Windows laptop, then the device just about gets you there for a reasonable price.

Microsoft recently expanded its Surface range of personal computers and the flagship will allow these new products to be available to Taiwanese consumers in the shortest possible time, according to Chang.

Under the hood, the Surface Go packs a 7th-gen 1.6GHz Pentium Gold 4415y CPU, a two-core, four-thread processor that's far from Intel's finest. This means it'll be more than good enough for browsing the web, watching Netflix, and putting together a PowerPoint presentation. Some of the features, borrowed from the more expensive Surfaces are unique though, and perhaps are the strongest way to convince students around the world that they don't need the cheapest or most common offerings from Google or Apple, but the simultaneously specialised and versatile Surface Go.

The most interesting thing about this new portable device is the fact that it comes with a USB-C port.

As we previously reported, the base $400 system will likely be equipped with the Pentium Silver N5000 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There's also the traditional proprietary Surface Connect port that be used for charging too as well as docking. It does have a headphone jack, though.

In its standard configuration, the Surface Go will come with Windows 10 S, which only supports apps from the Microsoft Store. An LTE model will be launching later in 2018. This device is going to have a 3:2 aspect ratio display and a resolution of 1800 x 1200.

The Surface Go's other hardware elements are very typical of Microsoft's Surface series as well. However, users can upgrade to a full version of Windows 10 for free.

But if you want a tablet rather than a PC, the Surface Go doesn't make much sense.

And of course, it doesn't hurt to have a lower entry point for the Surface product lineup. However, it is not quite as powerful as the Surface Pro in terms of specifications and features.

All in all, I'm left unsure as to how the Surface Go stacks up against the iPad.

The news, which was broken on Microsoft's official Windows Blog, confirms that the Go will be the cheapest, smallest, and lightest Surface ever.

"The custom calibrated 3:2 display is soft on your eyes while you're working and vibrantly high-contrast when you want to watch videos, create art, or edit photos", Microsoft says. In that sense, the announcement of the slightly smaller Surface Go is just picking up where the Surface 3 left off.
