Missing Oregon woman found alive near Big Sur

A pair of San Luis Obispo County residents who were camping in Big Sur became unlikely heroes Friday, locating an OR woman who had been missing for seven days after driving her vehicle over a cliff.

Angela Hernandez said she was trying to avoid hitting an animal when she swerved her jeep off the cliff in Big Sur. The department tweeted Friday evening to say that Hernandez was safe after she'd been reported missing some six days earlier.

"Reports are she was talking and could walk", according to the statement. Her family said she was driving from Portland to the southern California city of Lancaster to visit family when she vanished.

She stayed alive "by drinking water from the radiator of her vehicle", according to the Highway Patrol. "She's a fighter and she fought this long and she will continue to".

Monterey County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Thornburg said: "It's usually the fall that gets them, or the ocean that gets them, and she was lucky to survive both".

The search for her began July 9, three days after her family last heard from her.

Sheriffs said she had told her sister she would stay overnight in a auto park before continuing her journey the next morning, but they had not heard from her after 6 July. This is very traumatic and will be a slow recovery process, ' her sister Isabel wrote.
