Dem rep Trump 'regards war as a way to solve political problems'

US President Donald Trump on Sunday (July 22) warned Iranian President Hassan Rouhani not to threaten the United States again, after Rouhani cautioned Trump about pursuing hostile policies against Teheran.

Addressing a gathering of Iranian diplomats, Rohani said: "Mr Trump, don't play with the lion's tail, this would only lead to regret", ISNA reported. The US has said it will re-impose sanctions against Iran and has asked some other countries to take similar action.

"Sometimes it seems the world has become desensitized to the regime's authoritarianism at home and its campaigns of violence overseas, but the proud Iranian people are not staying silent about their government's many abuses", Pompeo said in prepared remarks for a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday that Iran "is run by something that resembles the mafia more than a government", citing what he described as vast wealth and corruption among the country's leaders.

"Despite provoking the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take actions against Iran, they failed to do so and then the United States embarked on an another approach, namely to persuade the European Union to review the Iran Deal", Rouhani boasted, adding that "Trump endeavored to do so but at the end he had to take a unilateral action and pull out the USA from the nuclear deal". "Be cautious!" Trump tweeted.

"It's about changing the behavior of the leadership in Iran to comport with what the Iranian people really want them to do", Pompeo said.

The narrow strategic passageway is located between Iran and Oman, through which at least 18.5m barrels of oil moved every day in 2016, according to a United States energy department report.

He said "overthrow, disintegration, boycott and weakening" were the main U.S. policies against Iran.

Rohani said that the pressure has strengthened national unity in the country.

"One who understands politics even a little bit wouldn't say "we will stop Iran's oil exports", he said, warning that the Strait of Hormuz is only one of the straits that Iran has control over.

Pompeo on Sunday reiterated the threat, stating that the USA is now in talks with Iran's partners "to get imports as close to zero as possible" by the stated deadline.
