On May 5 previous year, the top court had upheld the death penalty to the four convicts.

In May 2017, the Supreme Court had upheld the Delhi High Court's judgement that awarded death sentence to Akshay, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh life - convicts in Nirbhaya case that sent shock waves across the country.

The review petitions challenge the judgment of the Supreme Court delivered on May 5, 2017 confirming death penalty for all the four accused.

CNN-News18 (formerly known as CNN-IBN) has been the world's window to India and India's window to the world.

Hailing the move, CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat said, "We welcome the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the guilt of those who had appealed for a review".

The bench said the three convicts were heard elaborately after they had appealed against the Delhi High Court's ruling, and they had not made any case for a review of the top court's verdict upholding their death penalty. Challenging the Supreme Court's verdict, Mukesh had past year filed a review petition alleging that the court had not properly examined crucial evidence in the case.

The victim, a 23-year-old physiotherapist, was gang-raped by six persons, including a juvenile, in Delhi in a moving chartered bus on December 16, 2012.

UKIP 'Saves the Internet': EU's Attack on Memes Voted Down, Delayed
Earlier this week, supporter Paul McCartney penned a letter to MEPs, saying "Music and culture matter". Every political group in the Parliament was divided, with MEPs voting in favour and against the bill.

The Supreme Court said there were no grounds for changing the men's sentences. Her friend was beaten severely, and both were thrown out of the bus at a secluded spot. The incident occurred in Delhi on December 16, 2012.

January 28: Juvenile Justice Board rules that sixth accused is a minor. Fighting for life for 13 days, she died at a hospital in Singapore.

March 21: Government approves new tougher anti-rape law to punish sex crimes, including death for repeat rape offenders.

On August 31, the juvenile was sentenced to three years at a probation home. Another accused Ram Singh had allegedly committed suicide at the Tihar jail.

The brutality of the attack, and her determination to survive long enough to identify her attackers to police, triggered angry demonstrations by tens of thousands of people in Delhi and nationwide. The men were among four sentenced to death for an attack that galvanized India, where widespread violence against women had always been quietly accepted.

Four men were convicted in September 2013 for murder, gang rape, theft, conspiracy and "unnatural acts" after a seven-month trial in a fast-track court.

The convicts now have another legal option - to file a curative petition.
