Ontario Woman Drives Stolen Vehicle for 2 Weeks Thinking It's a Rental

The stolen vehicle was a 2015 black Infiniti QX50, but the woman didn't notice it wasn't the sedan she had rented. Shortly after, she returned to the parking lot, got into a black vehicle and headed home.

The saga began this past June when a woman from Cornwall, ON, which is about an hour west of Montreal, rented a black Nissan Sentra from a auto rental company.

Police in Canada are reminding drivers not to leave electronic key fobs sitting in unattended vehicles, after a woman in Ontario accidentally stole a auto for two weeks having mistaken it for her rental auto. The mix-up happened after the female motorist accidentally got into a similar looking auto - a black Infiniti, after completing her shopping at Wal-Mart.

"She drove around and did her daily business in this stolen vehicle for two weeks", MacKay said.

Though police say there was a "happy and amusing ending to this story", they say it serves as a flawless reminder not to leave key fobs in unattended vehicles.

It was the manager at the auto rental company who finally pieced together what had happened. The owner of the vehicle she drove away in had left his fob in the auto. The manager of the auto rental agency then realized what happened as the man whose vehicle had been stolen had come into the same Enterprise to rent a replacement.

"We investigate stolen vehicles but this is definitely a unique situation for us", said Stephanie MacRae, communications coordinator with Cornwall Police.

The woman drove the auto around for two weeks, then tried to return it to the rental vehicle company, police say.

At first, he tried to tell her that the company didn't even rent that model - but she was having none of it. For one, it was messy when she picked it up - and there was a set of golf clubs in the trunk.

And that's not even where the story ends. The owner said he had ducked into Walmart and returned to find his vehicle missing from the parking lot, according to police. Cue a phone call to police and, soon after, a happy reunion between a auto whose rightful owner believed it had been stolen, instead of borrowed by mistake. Soon after, a local man exited the store and began wandering about the parking lot in an increasing state of agitation, before concluding that his black Nissan Infiniti had been stolen, and calling police to report the theft.
