Ozil arrived in Singapore on Monday after announcing his retirement from international football

Ozil's announcement that he was retiring from worldwide football at the age of 29 came in a series of lengthy, defiant statements in which he decried his treatment in the wake of the nation's disastrous World Cup campaign as well as the reaction to a controversial meeting he held with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan back in May. As a team that's all we can do. And yet according to his statement, he has now, just four years later, faced racist abuse from German politicians and football fans due to his Turkish roots, as well as hate mail and threats. Emery said: 'It is a personal decision from Mesut and I respect it.

"For him it´s one thing with the national team and another with us", Emery said.

"He feels here with us that he can work every day, and it is good for us that he made a decision to come here and work with us before our two matches". We know the football [world] around us is about opinion and critique, we have a mentality and quality to work away from this opinion.

In Singapore, Ozil is receiving unconditional support from his colleagues and employers.

"We are expecting good matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid". Ozil is, however, in line to face PSG on Saturday.

"We are like his home".

Ozil's team-mate Petr Cech added: "He's an important player and obviously we're going to support him and make sure he feels right to perform at his best and feels comfortable".

"Mesut has the respect of every player here", said Emery, who was appointed as Arsene Wenger's successor in May.
