Protests Erupt In Chicago After Police Shooting

Saturday's fatal police involved shooting that sparked violent protests in Chicago was captured on police body camera which shows the man who was killed was asarmed with a handgun.

Chief Waller told reporters that the crowd became combative, throwing bottles and jumping on top of a squad vehicle. He would not name the officer who shot Augustus. The man became combative and eventually broke free from the officers, Waller said.

"When they approached him, he tried to push their hands away", Patrol Chief Fred Waller told reporters. The suspect did not fire his weapon, Waller said.

Chicago has been blighted by gun crime in recent times. He was taken to Jackson Park Hospital and pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m.

Witnesses told the Chicago Sun-Times that a female officer had opened fire on the man and then "was immediately put in a squad vehicle and taken away from the scene". The officer has not been identified. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said in a statement to WLS that there would be a "thorough, objective and unbiased investigation and requests the public's patience and cooperation". "Another black man killed by the police, something's got to change". No officers were injured during the shooting. The city erupted in protest in 2015 after the release of a video showing white police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting black 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014.

Angry locals chanted "Murderers!".

There were about 150 people protesting the shooting on Saturday night, the Chicago Tribune reported. Protesters shouted insults at the police and threw some bottles at them. McDonald's death led to the departure of the police chief and reforms meant to prevent future police abuses and to hold officers accountable. A Justice Department report issued in January 2017 determined Chicago police officers were guilty of frequently using "excessive force" against the city's African-American and Latino populations.

Protesters and police faced each other in a heated stand-off at the cordoned-off scene in the predominantly black South Shore neighborhood after a man was shot by an officer. Three years later, three officers were indicted on felony charges for allegedly conspiring to cover up the shooting. The Chicago Sun-Times said a few protesters were taken away by police. A livestream of the protest ended about that time also.

Four protesters were taken into custody, but only one was going to be charged, police said. He was, and was shot in the back killing him.

Four protesters were arrested in the clash, and some police officers suffered minor injuries from thrown rocks and bottles, some of which were filled with urine.
