Fifty-six percent disapprove of Trump, in a post-summit news conference with Putin, expressing doubt about USA intelligence conclusions that Russian Federation tried to influence the US election; just 29 percent approve.

Trump and Coats appeared to be at odds in the aftermath of the President's meeting with Putin at the beginning of the week.

The two diplomats also "exchanged views on ways to develop the relationship between our countries with the objective of normalizing them".

On the eve of the meeting, Jennifer Horn, a onetime New Hampshire GOP chairwoman who previously served on the RNC's executive committee, called on the RNC to support a formal resolution, as it did after Charlottesville, to clarify the party's position on Putin and Russia's continued efforts to meddle in US elections.

Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Anatoly Antonov, said the two leaders had discussed the possibility of a referendum in separatist-leaning eastern Ukraine during their Helsinki summit.

Trump declined to directly confront Putin on election interference during a news conference Monday that followed his private meeting with the Russian president in Helsinki.

The shock disclosure blindsided the US President's intelligence chief Dan Coats who was speaking at a security conference when the news broke and responded with "OK".

Republicans have repeatedly claimed the warrant constituted FISA abuse, while Democrats have rejected those allegations. The FISA application to surveil Page has been a point of contention for lawmakers in Congress.

Coats also revealed in the interview with NBC's Andrea Mitchell that he was unaware of what transpired in the private meeting between Trump and Putin in Helsinki, and restated without equivocation his belief that Russian Federation continues to pose a threat to the American electoral system.

Trump and Putin just sat down in Finland for a more than 2-hour meeting in which election meddling took center stage.

The White House released a statement saying that Trump "disagrees" with Putin's proposal.

Only one other American, State Department translator Marina Gross, was in the room with the American and Russian presidents, and the White House has offered few details about what was discussed.

Even for Trump, a leader who has increasingly come to cast off the constraints and guidance of aides, the him-against-the-world position proved untenable. "We are still very vulnerable and we don't have leadership from the administration".

In a statement, Coats restated the US intelligence assessment about Russian meddling and Moscow's "ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy".

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, says that the White House's mixed messages on Russian interference in US elections was "not a good moment for the administration".
