Donald Trump Helsinki

U.S. President Donald Trump, left and Russian President Vladimir Putin shake hands during their meeting in the Presidential Palace in Helsinki.

Trump says in a statement that he directly addressed meddling by Russia in the 2016 US election with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin told Trump at the start of their summit that it was time to talk about relations between Moscow and Washington.

Donald Trump congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin for his country's semi-final run in football world cup. But at the same time Iran is a good partner to us in terms of trade, economic cooperation, and political dialogue. In his trepidation, Coats was merely following Trump's former national security adviser, General HR McMaster, who warned past year: 'Russia and China are determined to make economies less free and less fair, to grow their militaries, and to control information and data to repress their societies and expand their influence.' Likewise, defence secretary Jim Mattis, secretary of state Mike Pompeo and current national security adviser John Bolton have all been sounding the alarm about Russia's intentions, and urging Trump to go in hard on Russia's electoral meddling.

"I think we have great opportunities together as two countries that, frankly, we have not been getting along very well for the last number of years ..."

Trump went on to say that "most importantly we have a lot of good things to talk about and things to talk about".

Even before Trump and Putin sat down Monday, Russia's government signaled that the two leaders were on the same page.

Hours before the Helsinki summit, Trump was asked if he would press Putin over Russia's alleged manipulation of the 2016 election that brought the mercurial property tycoon to power.

"Not welcome", read one sign, held by Hemmo Siponen, showing a cartoon of Trump and Putin embracing. He referred to the European Union itself as a "foe" in trade, and repeatedly criticised it.

May's Brexit plan on knife-edge as defeat avoided by 6 votes
May's government is defeated on an amendment committing the United Kingdom to retaining European Union regulations on medicines. Eight officials have quit since that summit, including two very high-profile Leave advocates, David Davis and Boris Johnson .

Trump, a brash 72-year-old billionaire, has been president for 18 months while Putin, 65, has run Russian Federation for the past 18 years.

The Russian Foreign Ministry rejected last week's indictment as part of a "shameful comedy" staged by those in the U.S. who try to prevent the normalization of Russia-U.S. ties, arguing that it doesn't contain evidence to back the accusations.

Ahead of their meeting at Finland's Presidential Palace, both leaders made brief opening remarks to reporters.

This latest interview segment, in which the president had harsher words for the European Union and FBI Agent Peter Strzok than for Russia, follows a heated summit between Trump and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners in Brussels and new charges against Russian intel officers for alleged meddling in the 2016 election campaign.

Despite clear interest in Russia in Putin's meeting with Trump, the summit wasn't the No. 1 item on many Russian newscasts or websites on Monday morning.

A second, expanded bilateral meeting with presidential aides followed the first session.

Peskov in Moscow avoided answering a question about a possible joint statement following the meeting, adding that a "joint communique is not a mandatory attribute of such meetings". "Will they reimburse the U.S.?"

Finland's biggest newspaper has a message for Trump and Putin: Respect a free press.

If Washington were to de facto accept Russia's 2014 land-grab, this would break with decades of USA policy and send tremors through NATO's exposed eastern flank.
