Rose ties Carnoustie lowest score in The Open

Rory McIlroy in contention with stoic round at rain-sodden Open

Rory McIlroy briefly had the joint lead in The Open but, for the second round running, the finishing stretch at Carnoustie saw him grudgingly give shots back that he had fought so hard to earn.

Another dropped shot at the 17th meant he needed to hole his approach to No. 18 for eagle to force a playoff, but it settled about 12 feet short.

Molinari shot a bogey-free, 2-under 69 to finish on 8-under 276.

"It will be interesting to see going forward, because this was his first taste of major championship drama for quite a while", McIlroy said.

With Kevin Chappell the nearest challenger to the leading trio on seven-under, the prospects of a sixth consecutive major being won by an American are high, but there is still hope for the European contingent.

Three-time champion Tiger Woods proved he's still got what it takes as he rolled back the years on Saturday, roaring into contention at the British Open with a sizzling third-round 66 at Carnoustie. Matt Kuchar, last year's runner-up, and Carnoustie course record-holder Tommy Fleetwood are also in that posse, as are on-form Italian Francesco Molinari, stuffy Swede Alex Noren and a rejuvenated Webb Simpson. During a down year, and a month after missing the U.S. Open cut, Spieth was seldom mentioned by the so-called experts as the pick to win this British Open.

After shooting 71 on Saturday to start the final round eight strokes off the lead, Pepperell said he was "so frustrated" and had "too much to drink last night". On Sunday, he drove into thick fescue on 11, then rocketed his second shot into the crowd, the ball ricocheting off a fan's shoulder, and then another's iPhone, and settling in more hay.

Meanwhile Schauffele, at 24 the same age as Spieth, shot a 67 to considerably boost his own chances of a first major victory.

The sun was peeking out of the clouds and Woods was walking up the first fairway when one spectator, a beer in his hand, shouted: "Go on Tiger, we got your back".

He laid up, then speared a majestic 150-yard wedge to within three feet.

Riyad Mahrez 'pleased' with start to life at Manchester City
It is of course the most negative thing about the day. "We spoke in the week about courage, intensity and a desire to play". Pep Guardiola is determined to help Hart and has put him in the shop window by using him in pre-season.

At 5-under, he was two shots back of leader Kevin Kisner as he left the 18th green to a standing ovation.

"You knew you'd have three, four good looks at birdies, and the rest of the holes, you were just going to try to position it to make par".

Golf hasn't stood still in Tiger Woods' absence.

He was still able to sign for a round of 70, which put him level with 2015 champion Zach Johnson.

Kisner, who led after round one and was tied for the lead after round two, stayed on top thanks to a 68, with three birdies and no bogeys.

"If I'm going down, " McIlroy said, "I'm going to go down swinging".

Dustin Johnson, the No. 1 player in the world, finished bogey-double bogey for a 72 and missed the cut by one. Woods shot 5-under 66 to get to T-6 and if you saw it, you definitely felt something.

Molinari is mindful of an expected change in the weather conditions for the last day, with the wind that can be so damaging in these parts finally expected to make its presence felt. It sounded like a Woods victory march as he strode to the green to complete a memorable round, and who knows what Sunday has in store when the winds are supposed to blow. Spieth, who finished tied for the lead at 9 under.

But perhaps it's no coincidence that once Woods took the lead for the first time, he frittered it away nearly immediately.
