The charges were drawn up by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director who is looking into Russian interference in the November 2016 vote and whether any members of Trump's campaign team colluded with Moscow. Former Obama staffers have expressed some misgivings about what, if anything, Obama could have done to prevent possible election meddling.

Russian officials began to target email addresses associated with Hillary Clinton's personal and campaign offices "on or around" the same day Donald Trump called on Russia to find emails that were missing from her personal server, according to a new indictment from Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was in Moscow on Saturday to meet with Vladimir Putin, just days after the Russian leader hosted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The reporter would later admit his mistake on Twitter, but did not delete his initial, inaccurate tweet, even as it racked up thousands of retweets.

Warner went on to urge the Trump administration to stop calling the Mueller probe a "witch hunt".

The indictment lays out a sweeping and coordinated effort to break into key Democratic email accounts, including those belonging to the Democratic National Committee, the Clinton campaign and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

During a joint news conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday, Mr Trump said he loves the United States, but also loves "getting along with Russian Federation and China and other countries".

In October 2016, the Obama administration accused Russian Federation of using hackers to meddle in the presidential election, after thousands of emails stolen from DNC servers were published by WikiLeaks.

The Justice Department's indictment of 12 Russian military intelligence agents on Friday was jaw-dropping in its scope and level of details into attempts to influence the 2016 United States presidential election. The White House seized on those points in a statement that offered no condemnation of Russian election interference.

That group appears to match WikiLeaks, which released large numbers of hacked Democratic Party emails during the 2016 campaign. His team is investigating efforts by Russian Federation to influence the 2016 USA presidential election.

The Kremlin, meanwhile, denied anew that it tried to sway the election.

Before ending his final term as president, Obama also approved additional sanctions against Russia, closed Russian diplomatic compounds in the US, and expelled diplomats.

But the indictment identifies the defendants as officers with Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff, also known as GRU.

The GRU, which answers to the Russian military's General Staff, is part of the state machine and its involvement would indicate that the orders to interfere in the US election came from the very top. They also hacked into the computer networks of the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, in an operation starting around March 2016, the filing said. But he noted the indictment does not allege those two Americans knew they were communicating with Russians, nor does it state any USA citizen committed a crime.

He said Russia's GRU military intelligence service was behind online entities that disseminated and promoted the documents under the names Guccifer 2.0 and DCLeaks. Private speeches she gave to financial industry firms were particularly damaging within the left wing of the Democratic party and among independents frustrated with the influence of Wall Street in politics. In one case, they searched documents ofr keywords such as "hillary" "trump" and "cruz" and copied files contained in a folder called "Benghazi Investigation", the indictment alleges.
