Samsung Announces New 'Unbreakable' Phone Displays

Samsung's bold claim was verified by Underwriter Laboratories (UL), an official testing partner for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This is quite different from what is now offered, where most displays have a glass film, which is usually what cracks on impact.

The display passed rigorous durability tests, Samsung said, including being dropped 26 times in a row from a height of almost 4 feet and continued to function normally, suffering no damage to its front, sides or edges.

But the South Korean tech giant is fighting back - and earlier today it announced the development of a new "unbreakable" OLED smartphone panel.

Until Samsung presents a working product to market, we will not know some of the important characteristics of their unbreakable displays. If everyone else has breakable smartphone displays while Samsung's is neigh-impervious to pain, whose would you choose?

The UL testing showed that the new unbreakable OLED panel passed the rigorous real-time durability test based on US Department of Defence military standards. After all 26 drops were performed, UL found no damage on the front, sides, or edges of the display.

Or our children who go to school worrying about whether or not they're going to be safe and the parents dropping them off. But, again, Jarrett reiterated that "there are so many issues that are more important".

The panels also survived another round of impact tests in which they were dropped from heights of up to 6 feet and continued to function normally without any signs of damage. Samsung wasn't specific about the nature of the substrate or the overlay, saying simply that the protective layer was "fortified plastic" with transmissivity and hardness "very similar to glass". I suspect we'll see it used first in a Samsung-branded device, though.

Samsung hasn't revealed when or which of its smartphones might in line for the display, but you can nearly guarantee that it will show up on a future Galaxy S10 Active.

According to Shara Tibken, CNET's Samsung beat reporter, announcements like these from Samsung often come just prior to the use of such a technology in a new device.

The company expects to use the durable OLED panel also for automobile consoles, mobile military devices, portable game consoles and tablet PCs for learning.
