The launch forms part of events across the world, culminating locally in an annual Mandela Day lecture by former US President Barack Obama next week.

Obama is in Kenya to help launch the sports and training centre founded by his half-sister, Auma Obama, through her foundation Sauti Kuu.

Obama, according to local media, headed straight to State House, where he was slated for a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

President Kenyatta congratulated the former USA president for establishing the Obama Foundation which seeks to empower the youth to become the agents of change in Africa. Obama is visiting Kenya for the fifth time, as a private citizen. Odinga is now working with Kenyatta's government following a tense political standoff that included an invalidated presidential election.

Defending champion Rafa Cabrera Bello missed the cut, which came at 4 under, after a 67 left him on 1 under. If the concrete Open is looming, Gullane will not be far behind.

Obama will leave South Africa on Thursday.

Large crowds are however expected in Kisumu, Kenya's third largest city, where Obama will fly on Monday before driving to his father's home village of Kogelo in Siaya County, a journey of about 70 kilometres. It is expected that about 400 dignitaries will go to K'Ogelo with Obama.

Barack Obama will use visits to Kenya and South Africa this week to spur efforts to find African leaders of the future as he seeks to set the tone for his legacy beyond the White House.

Obama announced the trip last week on Twitter, writing, "I'm traveling to Africa for the first time since I left office - a continent of wonderful diversity, thriving culture and remarkable stories".
