Talks with USA on dismantling nuclear programme were regrettable, says North Korea

North Korea has called high-level talks with a U.S. delegation led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "extremely regrettable", contradicting Washington's account of how the meeting in Pyongyang went.

Pompeo met for almost three hours Friday with a senior North Korean official in Pyongyang to nail down specifics of commitments on denuclearization made at Trump's summit with Kim. Pompeo just hours earlier said the two sides engaged in "good-faith negotiations".

According to a pool report from usa reporters travelling with him, Pompeo replied: "Director Kim, I slept just fine. I appreciate that and I look forward to our continued conversations today as well".

However, he has since renewed sanctions on North Korea, while U.S. intelligence officials have said there is evidence North Korea continues to upgrade the infrastructure for its nuclear and missile programmes.

But Trump has repeatedly suggested he can get things done with North Korea (and many other fronts) by the force of his personality and his unorthodox approach, which in this instance, reportedly included sending a gift to Kim with Pompeo - a CD of Elton John's song "Rocket Man". "There are things that I have to clarify", he said.

Mr Pompeo, who did not meet with Mr Kim Jong Un on this trip, could point to no concrete achievement from the talks aside from an agreement for the two sides to meet around July 12 in Panmunjom, the border village between the two Koreas, to discuss returning the remains of United States soldiers from the 1950-1953 Korean War. She said the dinner lasted an hour and 45 minutes and at times the two were "cracking jokes" and "exchanging pleasantries".

New dates for the India talks are yet to be nailed down, although Washington is said to the have indicated they could happen in September, in New Delhi or New York/Washington.

But the North provided a much harsher assessment of the talks, saying the U.S. had betrayed the spirit of last month's summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un by making "one-sided and robber-like" demands on "CVID" - the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of North Korea. Pompeo is on a trip traveling to North Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Abu Dhabi, and Brussels.

"Of course it is important", Vice Chairman Kim told the U.S. Secretary.

She said the two sides had also discussed the return of the remains of American troops killed during the Korean War.

Both issues are considered essential tests of whether Kim is serious about talks.

State media said the regime's "firm, steadfast" resolve to give up its nuclear programmes may falter after the United States demanded unilateral denuclearisation during two days of talks in Pyongyang.

Pompeo, accompanied by senior State Department and Central Intelligence Agency officials, held several hours of talks on Friday evening and had a working dinner with Kim Yong Chol at which both were "cracking jokes" and "exchanging pleasantries", according to Nauert.

Ahead of the summit, Pompeo said Trump would reject anything short of "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization".

However, he emphasized that the North still has trust in U.S. President Donald Trump, apparently hinting that Pyongyang wants to keep the ongoing denuclearization talks on track.
