Tommy Fleetwood fades before late burst of form

Waiting for him to slip up are former Open champion Zach Johnson and England's Tommy Fleetwood, who are on six-under-par and five-under-par respectively. But he somehow chipped in for birdie to get his round off to a flying start and roar back into contention, finishing the day three shots off the pace.

"I struggled yesterday tee to green", Fleetwood told Sky Sports. It is the first time that I was playing in the weekend at The Open.

"In tough conditions that's a really good round of golf and it makes such a nice difference to birdie the last too". We're only halfway through the tournament unfortunately, 36 holes is a long way to go.

The 27-year-old knows how big an achievement it would be if he becomes the first Englishman in over a quarter of a century to win The Open Championship tomorrow.

That was the projected cut mark with the second round yet to be completed by press time.

An absorbing third round at The Open ended with defending champion Jordan Spieth forcing his way to the top of the leaderboard thanks to a six-under-par round of 65.

But all that could be eclipsed if he continues his form from the second round here at Carnoustie.

‘Never ever threaten US’: Donald Trump warns Iran President on Twitter
He said "overthrow, disintegration, boycott and weakening" were the main U.S. policies against Iran . Iran faces the possibility of more US pressure and "looming sanctions", according to the report .

He walked onto the first tee as rain steadily fell and whipped out his driver, unleashing a booming tee-shot to underline his strategy for the day. Two bullet straight two irons were followed by two regulation putts and Fleetwood's confidence was rightly soaring. If I could pick one tournament in my life to win, it would be The Open.

"Last year [Birkdale, home course] was more hard in terms of expectation".

"Rounds like today, they just show you, when you play well, you're on - and I mean, you are on - I don't really think you can get a much tougher test than Shinnecock or Carnoustie really, but you're on the toughest test in golf".

"But, yeah, it's something that you get used to and something that you have to learn about, but at the same time, it's much nicer than having no eyes on you at all". I was planning to play in front of my home crowd initially but I just can't right now.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson carded an underwhelming 72 which left the American six over for the tournament. Three birdies out, and three coming back, including a 20-footer at the last, saw Fleetwood in a happy man.

Fleetwood has won four times on the European Tour including successive Abu Dhabi Championships, but has really shone at The Open, missing the cut three times and finishing tied for 27th past year.
