Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin), a victor of the last cobbles stage in 2015, did not start following a crash Saturday.

TV footage showed Porte grimacing in pain after the crash, sitting on the side of the road and feeling his right shoulder.

The 25-year-old Dutch rider won his second consecutive stage on Saturday, joining world champion Peter Sagan and Tour newcomer Fernando Gaviria as two-stage winners at this edition of the world's leading cycling race.

Several other riders, including Porte's teammate Stefan Kung, went down in the same crash.

Porte's best finish at the Tour was fifth in 2016.

Race leader Greg van Avermaet won the classic a year ago, but others like Dan Martin, injured in a nasty crash yesterday, and Chris Froome, whose Tour ended around these parts in 2014, will just hope to get through it. Porte was caught up in an early-race pileup in the opening kilometers of the stage as the peloton was seeing the day's first attacks.

Porte's unfortunate exit Sunday is the latest in a string of mishaps and misfortune for the scrappy Tasmanian who looked to be on the form of his life after winning the Tour de Suisse in June.

He crashed out in dramatic fashion during a mountain descent in 2017 at the same stage.

Porte has been taken to hospital for x-rays on a suspected broken collarbone.

Dylan Groenewegen has turned the sprinting battle at the Tour de France into a three-man race.

At 33, time is running out for Porte to stay a Tour contender.
