Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 kilometers) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 kilometers).

As it reaches the colder Maritime waters, it will weaken to a post-tropical depression as it approaches the Avalon Penninsula of Newfoundland overnight Wednesday.

The storm, though, is still expected to send swells on the North Carolina coast as well as the mid-Atlantic, the network said.

Hurricane Chris is moving at 22 miles per hour and is expected to continue picking up speed for several days, and the National Hurricane Center named it a Category 2 storm.

The rain from Tropical Storm Chris has already started on the south coast of Newfoundland. "These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions", the center said. It could strengthen to a category 1 hurricane by early Wednesday morning, but is not expected to make landfall anywhere in the U.S.

Without him "this mission may not have succeeded", the Thai rescue chief, Narongsak Osottanakorn, told reporters late Wednesday. That's good news for the boys who had said they were looking forward to fried rice with basil.

Storm Chris has now been upgraded to a hurricane and is set to hit the United Kingdom with gales and damper weather.

She told Daily Star Online: "Former Atlantic hurricanes can have a huge impact on the UK's weather, but it can be both positive and negative".

"The fate Chris will bring us is far from yet determined". The center said people along the coast should continue to monitor the hurricane.

The storm has maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour with higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Rainfall and wind warnings also remained in effect, with gusts up to 110 km/h and up to 80 mm of rain possible for southeastern Newfoundland.
