Sanders would not say whether Trump agrees that the nominee, who he will name next Monday, should respect the high court's precedent, or whether he believes Roe v. Wade is settled law.

"During the morning I interviewed and met with four potential justices of our great Supreme Court", Trump said.

The interviews were with federal appeals judges Raymond Kethledge, Amul Thapar, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, said a person with knowledge of the meetings who was not authorized to speak publicly about them.

Lee, a former federal prosecutor who had clerked for Associate Justice Samuel Alito at the circuit court level and at the Supreme Court, was on that list.

Senate Democrats and left-leaning political groups, anticipating a pick who would shift the court farther to the right on issues such as abortion, are gearing up for a fight.

"I would not support a nominee who demonstrated hostility to Roe v. Wade because that would mean to me that their judicial philosophy did not include a respect for established decisions, established law", Collins said.

"There is no ambivalence on abortion as men and women dig in and say, 'Hands off Roe v. Wade, '" said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll.

Magic Johnson’s 2016 Tweet About LeBron James Cost Him Honorary Lakers Title
Caldwell-Pope, who's represented by the same agent as LeBron, spent last season in L.A. and will re-sign on a $12 million deal. In a busy day for the franchise on Sunday, they reportedly acquired three more free agents to play alongside the King.

The president spent the weekend at his Bedminster golf club, consulting with advisers, including White House counsel Don McGahn, as he considers his options to fill the vacancy with a justice who has the potential to be part of precedent-shattering court decisions on abortion, health care, gay marriage and other issues.

The president nominated 34 judges to the United States Court of Appeals, and the Senate has already confirmed 20. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a member of the Judiciary Committee, said he didn't think Trump would be overly focused on the Roe ruling. Raj Shah, the principal deputy press secretary, will take leave from his post to handle "communications, strategy and messaging coordination with Capitol Hill allies" full time, according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

Casey's own stand on the abortion issue has become a hot topic in his reelection campaign, with Republican challenger Rep. Lou Barletta accusing him of being a starkly different lawmaker than his notably pro-life Democrat father, Gov. Robert Casey Sr., and calling the impending Supreme Court vote important to Casey's political future.

The president told reporters Friday that he was homing in on up to seven candidates, including two women, and would announce his choice on July 9. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he plans to vote on the nominee in October. Collins, who appeared on ABC's "This Week" and CNN's "State of the Union", said she would only back a judge who would show respect for settled law such as the Roe decision, which has always been anathema to conservatives.

Three Democrats, all from states Trump won in 2016, supported Trump's prior pick, Justice Neil Gorsuch - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of Indiana.

The moderate Kennedy, 81, for years kept the powerful court from moving decisively into a conservative bias favored by Republicans.
