'Making America 1929 Again': GOP Sen. Sasse Rips Trump on Tariffs, Planned Farmer 'Bailout'

The European Union has said it is prepared to discuss lowering tariffs "in all sectors" if the United States drops its punitive levies on aluminium and steel, ahead of a crunch meeting today. "Instead of putting the weight on somebody else", VanWychen says. He has also threatened to slap tariffs on imported cars, trucks and auto parts, potentially targeting imports that a year ago totalled $335 billion.

The president said he was fighting to get America a better deal after decades of being taken advantage of by trading partners. The main topic on the table was the 25% trade tariffs the United States is imposing on European Union steel imports and the retaliatory levies Brussels has slapped on American products such as jeans, motorbikes and bourbon whisky.

In a speech on Tuesday, he said farmers would be the "biggest beneficiary" of the disputes after countries strike new deals. "I told him he better keep that job". More than 80 witnesses are scheduled to testify during a two-day trade hearing starting in Washington Tuesday focused on products from resins and chemicals to large freight containers, electric bicycles and vaping devices.

In addition to the direct impact of tariffs on American farm products, farmers have also been hurt by US tariffs on foreign steel imports. During their Oval Office meeting, Mr. Trump said he expects something "very positive to take place" during their discussions, but was adamant that a "level playing field" is needed for USA farmers and manufacturers.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom, who is accompanying Juncker, expressed some optimism that a solution could still be found, but also said the EU is drawing up a list of $20 billion in U.S. products to be targeted for retaliation if the trip fails. She said her bill would come at "no additional cost" while Trump's plan will only scratch the surface of farmers' losses.

"This is the first time we've gotten good news".

"Tariffs are taxes that punish American consumers and producers", Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul wrote on Twitter.

Researchers spot what looks like a standing ‘lake’ of water on Mars
Until now, we knew that water exists in ice around the planet , as well as that there are signs of liquid water on the surface . This is a significant development, as it appears to confirm that water - albeit briny - is flowing today on the surface of Mars.

President Trump "has promised that he had the back of every American farmer and rancher", Perdue said.

Since the tariff was enacted, the price for US soybeans has dropped roughly 20 percent, said Chad Hart, an economist at Iowa State University. "They can compete with anybody if we can get free and fair trade".

On the other side, Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin released a statement, saying the state of Wisconsin has already lost 500 dairy farmers in the past year. The EU had demanded the metals tariffs be reversed before it agreed to talks on other trade issues.

But more voices including in Trump's own Republican Party are coming out against his confrontational stance. "This administration's tariffs and bailouts aren't going to make America great again, they're just going to make it 1929 again".

Republican Senator Ben Sasse, a frequent Trump critic, said the president's trade policies recalled a past of perilous economic instability.

"This friction that we're having, as long as it results in lowering barriers. that's great".
