Trump Trade War - US Senate demands a say

Trump's tariffs on aluminum and steel draw protests from Senate

Corker, who is locked in a war of words with Trump, said Tuesday the president is degrading the country by "standing up in front of the American people and stating untruths that everybody knows to be untrue".

At the same time Trump has slapped a new round of tariffs on China, sending trade tensions to new heights - though those are not being done in the name of national security.

Those negotiators are free to ignore the Senate's guidance, and the role that Congress would play would have to be worked out down the road.

Instead, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican, has said he'll begin what could be a months-long process to examine whether Congress should take back some of the power to impose tariffs it has delegated to the executive branch.

"This is a vote for Congress to assume its rightful role", said Sen.

Corker and other supporters described the motion as a necessary step to stand up against what they called Trump's abuse of presidential authority.

The upper chamber approved the measure in a 88-11 vote. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., is focused on Trump's decision to impose steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, Mexico, the European Union and others.

"In addition to diminishing the economic benefits of the administration's successful tax and regulatory policies, these tariffs - and resulting trade retaliation from other countries - will continue to impose tremendous costs on USA businesses and workers, erode US global competitiveness and economic growth, and undermine key USA economic and security relationships".

"This is about making sure America is treated fairly", Purdue said.

He added that "we will continue pushing for a binding vote on this legislation in the near future".

"Our overriding concern now is that those gains will be entirely reversed by major missteps in USA trade policy", Bolten said.

The Trump administration is also weighing imposing tariffs on autos and auto parts under the Section 232 authority, a move some GOP lawmakers believe could be economically ruinous.

White House officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The vote comes as Trump is overseas at the annual North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels.

The trade conflict has roiled markets in recent weeks, despite indications of a strong economy. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Sen.

"I don't think this administration understands how fortunate we are to have the neighbours we have", he said.

Wednesday's vote does not achieve that goal either. Is yours on the list?
