UNC coach Fedora: "Our game is under attack", could bring down America

If football goes down ‘our country will go down too,’ says one high-profile coach

It's not very often when a head coach can lose on a conference's media day, but UNC head coach Larry Fedora went down swinging on Wednesday. UNC's head coach was holding court and answering questions about football and safety and the Tar Heels injury woes past year.

"We don't really know that", Fedora said, per Auerbach.

"I fear that the game will get pushed so far to one extreme that you won't recognize the game 10 years from now", Fedora told reporters.

It's a time for players and coaches to list the reasons for optimism in the fall.

He would later double down on his comments, saying that changing football would be "the decline of our country".

Fedora said he was concerned with how the idea that football concussions lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, has and will affect people's perception of the sport.

NCAA sets Final Four sites for 2023-26, sticks with familiar cities
San Antonio , site of this year's Final Four, will host in 2025 and Indianapolis will be the host city in 2026, along with 2021. Houston, San Antonio and Indianapolis join Phoenix as cities selected Monday to host Final Fours from 2023 to 2026.

It may be unwise to suggest there is a stone-cold fact that indisputably links football to CTE, but more and more research is connecting the dots fairly strongly.

A study past year found that all but one of 111 brains of former National Football League players found CTE. Still, Fedora is taking up his side in the so-called war on football. There is no disputing that.

Fedora's possibly inflated sense of the importance of football to the future of America might come from the (also possibly inflated) salaries that football coaches are paid. He said he had talked to military personnel who suggested the success of the US military was due, in part, to the number of football players who later joined the armed forces.

In between questions regarding North Carolina's quarterback battle and the expectations for the 2018 season, Fedora was brought back to the topic of the relationship between football and the country.

If Fedora doesn't make UNC great again, he may be taking his war on football to the unemployment line.
