Wayne Rooney comes off bench to make MLS debut with DC United

Former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney says he "wants to win" after he made a victorious debut for DC United on Saturday.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, Leicester City's centre-back Harry Maguire and Tottenham Hotspur's Kieran Trippier have been the major standout players of the campaign for England, and while it would be hard to choose who the country's best player at the tournament is, Everton legend Wayne Rooney reckons it's Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Rooney rejoined Everton from Manchester United past year, but, despite scoring 11 goals, he was told that he didn't have a future at Goodison Park.

Rooney, who led Everton with 11 goals in all competitions last season, also said the Premier League club did not give him a reason that he wasn't in the plans for next season.

Obviously at Manchester United, that wasn't happening (playing) as much as I would have liked, and I quite easily could have stayed there with two years left on my contract and picked up the wages and been happy with that, and that's it.

'Ceasefire reached' between Israel and Gaza militants
Last Friday, one person was killed and 57 were wounded by Israeli military fire in protests at the Gaza-Israel border. Hamas said another Palestinian had died after being shot by Israeli troops during border protests on Friday.

On this point, Rooney said: "For whatever reason, I still don't know". I felt I was doing OK, I was top goal scorer playing most of the season from midfield, but that's football.

"I've made a few debuts over my career and today was no different than the other ones", Rooney said before giving a detailed account of his pregame activities.

Rooney had a hand in two of DC United's goals as they beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in the MLS, although did not get on the scoresheet himself. As an 18, 20 or 21 year old, I wouldn't have been able to handle it as well as I have. "And if you want me to stay, tell me".

"I was just as eager to get on the pitch as they were to see me on the pitch", Rooney said.

A host of famous players have played in MLS in recent years, including the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, with the latter now playing for LA Galaxy alongside Rooney's former team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
