White House press corps shows unity after reporter barred

US President Donald Trump has regularly dismissed CNN as "fake news" during his time in the White House.

According to reports, after CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins asked about the tapes between Trump and former attorney Michael Cohen and Russian president Putin's postponed visit to the US, she was told by White House communications staff that she would not be welcome to attend a subsequent joint event between Trump and European commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.

Olivier Knox, president of the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA), denounced the White House decision. It can not stand. Reporters asking questions of powerful government officials, up to and including the president, helps hold those people accountable.

CNN's communications team posted a list of the questions Collins asked Wednesday on its Twitter page, saying "they were not" inappropriate.

It was "made clear that any other journalist from her network could attend".

The ban on White House reporter Kaitlan Collins sparked outcry from traditional rival Fox News and the White House Correspondents Association, which called the decision "wrong-headed, and weak".

The correspondent, Kaitlan Collins, says the White House denied her access to Trump's Rose Garden statement on trade with the European Union Commission president because officials found her earlier questions "inappropriate".

According to Ms. Collins, she told the White House spokespeople that "You're banning me from an event because you didn't like the questions I asked?"

"To be clear, we support a free press and ask that everyone be respectful of the presidency and guests at the White House", the press secretary said.

Cohen recording of pay-off talk broadcast on US TV
Cohen replies, "We'll have to pay". "The good news is that your favorite President did nothing wrong! ". Last night, Lanny Davis , Michael Cohen's lawyer, released a tape to CNN .

The 70-year-old Trump built his campaign on criticizing the press as biased. "She said it didn't matter to her because she hadn't planned to be there anyway", Sanders said.

The network calls the decision "retaliatory in nature" and "not indicative of an open and free press". "But you are not invited to the Rose Garden today".

The Trump administration has been openly hostile to CNN and other news networks, and frequently bristles at any news coverage it believes is anything less than favourable to Trump. Wednesday was CNN's turn, and since there aren't often many opportunities to ask the president questions, Collins chose to ask him two questions regarding the biggest stories of the day. In our republic, the WHCA supports the prerogative of all reporters to do their jobs without fear of reprisal from the government'. CNN obtained the tape and ran it on air on Tuesday evening.

The president did not address Collins' questions.

On Thursday, Fox News is on pool duty. This can not stand. Kaitlan is a great reporter.

Collins graduated from Prattville High School in Prattville, Alabama and attended the University of Alabama, where she originally studied chemistry and later transitioned to journalism and political science.

Trump has repeatedly clashed with CNN's Jim Acosta, although he wrote in a tweet he was a "nice guy".

Hala Gorani, an anchor for CNN International, reacted to the fracas by tweeting, "I've reported from many countries where reporters are banned from press events for not asking softball questions and the last thing I expected was for it to happen in the United States".
