All the astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) have been taken there on Russian Soyuz spacecraft since the retirement of the American shuttle in 2011.

The names of the astronauts will be unveiled at a news conference at 11 a.m. ET that will be streamed live online on CBC News.

However, as the Inquisitr reported earlier today, Boeing has just announced it will be delaying the entire launch schedule of its Starliner spacecrafts, aiming for a first crewed test flight in mid-2019.

The setback comes as Boeing is entrenched in a competition with Elon Musk's SpaceX to deliver astronauts to the space station, replacing the Russian rockets now used for that goal.

Although both Boeing and SpaceX still have a few milestones to reach before the launch of their respective astronaut-ferrying spacecraft, NASA is already looking ahead at resuming US -based crewed spaceflights. He will make the announcement at NASA's Johnson Space Center Friday morning. The space agency, in 2014, had joined forces with SpaceX and Boeing to build the Crew Dragon lifting-off atop the Falcon 9 rocket and the Starliner spacecraft to lift-off atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, respectively. That schedule calls for an uncrewed test flight in late 2018 or early 2019, followed by a crewed test flight in mid-2019.

Under the Obama administration, NASA's Earth Science program saw the fastest growth of any science division at the agency, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Neither SpaceX nor Boeing is expected to be ready to carry out flights with people on board by that date because of various delays in certifying their programs, the independent Government Accountability Office said in its July report.

In March, teams from Boeing, NASA and ULA gathered in control rooms across the country for an integrated crew exercise of Boeing's Orbital Flight Test. Boeing also completed two joint rendezvous docking system simulations with the space station.

Before the engine problem, Boeing was planning to start the tests this year, but they had to change the schedule, so it is possible that both tests will start in 2019. "And NASA will be the anchor tenant", said scientist in residence John Charles at Space Center Houston.

The crews will begin training to get ready for their launch.

In March, SpaceX performed two parachute tests, the company's 14th and 15th overall parachute test supporting Crew Dragon development in the Mojave Desert in Southern California. Both will be starting to show off their capsules with uncrewed flight tests by the end of the year.
