3 killed in Greenville plane crash, police say

A ME airport manager says three people have died after a small plane that departed from Ontario bound for Prince Edward Island crashed during an attempted landing. They say the Federal Aviation Administration is sending an investigator to the scene.

Pilot Joseph Robertson, 58, and passengers Anita Robertson, 58, and Laura Robertson, 24, died when their twin-engine propellor plane crash-landed in a field outside the Greenville Municipal Airport Monday morning, according to Greenville Police Chief Jeff Pomerleau. However, this was most likely an emergency landing and Greenville would not have been a scheduled pit stop for the flight.

The plane appeared to have been trying to make an emergency landing, but missed the runway, said Jesse Crandall, Greenville's town manager, who oversees the municipal airport.

"It is very sad".

Pomerleau said police will be monitoring the scene for the remainder of the day.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are expected to arrive Tuesday.

The Greenville airport is located on the southern tip of Moosehead Lake, and the town is about 150 miles north of Portland.

The Guardian was unsuccessful in reaching Charlottetown Airport Authority CEO Doug Newson to confirm that the Island's capital city was the plane's destination.

Crandall said that to his knowledge, the airport had never had an incident like Monday. All three people on board were killed.

"Shortly after, we discovered the crash", he said.

In 2011, a MA man died when a plane he was flying crashed near the airport.
