Trump-Juncker deal has nothing to do with free trade: German MP

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said the package will include a mix of direct payments to farmers, commodity purchases for nutrition programs and increased promotion of new USA export markets.

Trump and the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday agreed to avoid an all-out trade war. Checks will go out to farmers "as soon as they prove their yields", according to Perdue, who says the yields will be based on actual production, not historical averages. Traders welcomed the de-escalation in the U.S./EU trade dispute but did not expect changes in oilseed trade. A big part of the answer is broken farm policy that drives USA agriculture to constantly produce more.

The EU also agreed to buy more USA soybeans and build more terminals to import liquefied natural gas from the United States. However, Perdue cautioned: "Obviously this is not going to make farmers whole".

"American farmers work hard to put food on our tables but because of new tariffs our farmers livelihoods are at risks", the ad states.

Market analysts said the surge was caused by plunging prices in June, as China largely stopped buying USA soybeans in retaliation for trade measures that Trump has targeted at Beijing. "This is a great day for our agriculture community and an example of how the Trump Administration is committed to supporting our producers by opening new markets for their products".

A member of the German Federal Parliament has said the trade deal between the United States and the European Union is only appeasing Washington and has nothing to do with free trade. This, despite statistics reported by the Wall Street Journal, as quoted by the US government, showing a $9.4 billion agricultural trade surplus in favor of the EU.
