The smoke is from a series of wildfires burning on the West Coast.

The Stage 1 Burn Ban was also lifted at 1 p.m. Thursday due to the improved air quality conditions.

An Air Quality Advisory first issued on August 13 continues as of August 23 for the Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley regions, making it the longest air quality advisory on record for the region.

Before the smoke cleared out overnight, many municipalities reported heavier concentrations of the haze late Wednesday.

The weather office said those fine particulates should continue to decline across the Lower Mainland and a smog advisory has been dropped.

But now, a trough of cooler air from the Strait of Juan de Fuca has replaced that smoke with fog and clouds.

A Spare the Air Alert is in effect for Friday, Aug. 24, for the San Francisco Bay Area, the 10th of the Summer Season.

The Washington Department of Ecology's Air Quality Monitoring Website showed some red dots (unhealthy) in the Seattle region and orange dots (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups).

In general, smoky conditions can cause irritation of the eyes, throat and sinuses.

The Pacific air will take longer to reach the inland communities of the south coast and B.C.'s interior will see little improvement in smoky conditions as northwest winds prevail in the area.

Air quality ratings in the Interior remain high risk. The biggest health threat from smoke comes from fine particles.

Meanwhile, in Quebec, there is no air quality warning, but some northern areas of the province are under a severe wind warning, with gusts as strong as 90 km.
