Warner Bros has signed Alec Baldwin to play the role of Thomas Wayne, Batman's father, in the highly anticipated, yet to be titled The Joker origins movie, reports Variety. His character was first introduced in Detective Comics #33 November, 1939. One night after attending the theater he was shot along with his wife leaving the young Bruce Wayne as the only survivor.

In the original DC comics, Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered in Crime Alley by a mugger named Joe Chill, which became the catalyst for their son Bruce's rise as Batman. Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider said only Wayne would play a "big role".

A three-time Emmy victor, Baldwin landed his latest Emmy nomination in the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for his spoof portrayal of President Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live. Baldwin was nominated for a supporting actor Oscar in 2004 for The Cooler and recently starred in this summer's half-billion-plus grossing hit Mission: Impossible - Fallout as well as Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman which is taking off on the specialty circuit with north of $31M.
