All eyes on 'right-hand man' as Manafort trial resumes

HANNITY: Manafort Case 'HAS NOTHING TO DO' with Russia Collusion, President Trump

Prosecutors say Manafort used the offshore bank accounts, based mainly in Cyprus, to purchase millions of dollars of goods and services and avoided paying taxes on the money he received for political consulting work he did in Ukraine.

In his defense, Manafort's legal team has argued that he left the details of his spending to others, saying that his involvement with longtime associate Rick Gates led to accounting errors.

He said Weissmann was a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton and was also in attendance at what was supposed to be her election night victory party at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.

When Asonye asked Laporta whether she believed Manafort was getting the $2.4 million in additional income, which he said would be deposited in November of that year, Laporta said she "had no idea".

"In other words, Mueller could have indicted the leading edge, perhaps to convince Manafort to cooperate with him down the road", she said.

Laporta was granted immunity to testify.

Cindy Laporta said that in 2015, Manafort's right-hand man, Rick Gates, told her his boss couldn't afford to pay his taxes. She works for KWC, the tax firm that lists Manafort as a client, and she began managing his taxes in 2014.

Laporta said the move likely saved Manafort $400,000 to $500,000 in taxes.

"I regret it", she told the jury. "You can't pick and chose what's a loan and what's income".

Prosecutors also showed Washkuhn a March 2016 email that Gates had sent to a Banc of California executive in pursuit of a loan for Manafort.

The most significant moment on Friday, however, came when assistant U.S. attorney Uzo Asonye asked Laporta to describe a conference call in September 2015.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III has questioned the government's use of such materials and in several instances, directed prosecutors not to use photographs and other evidence of Manafort's lavish lifestyle.

Feeling sidelined, Israel’s Druze protest Jewish nation bill
Individual rights, Netanyahu said, are anchored in numerous Jewish state's (existing) laws, but not so Jewish national rights. The Druze revere Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, whose tomb in northern Israel is one of their most sacred sites.

"You believed it was false?" "The government is not going to prosecute people for wearing nice clothes", Ellis said.

Manafort, wearing a blue suit, blue shirt and purple tie, looked engaged during Friday's proceedings - sometimes taking notes, sometimes looking at the attorneys or witnesses and sometimes staring straight ahead.

The proceedings ended before Manafort attorney Kevin Downing could cross-examine her.

Manafort signed an agreement to account for that loan that was backdated, according to Laporta and an exhibit shown to the jury.

The second day of the trial of Paul Manafort in Alexandria, Virginia, detailed the free-spending ways of the political consultant, from buying some of the most expensive suits in the world, to buying his daughter a almost $2 million home, paid for with cash.

Laporta said Manafort provided no documentation to back up the claim.

So Laporta said she agreed to record a $1.5 million loan to Manafort's company as forgiven.

Manafort is charged with bank fraud, conspiracy, preparing false tax returns and failing to disclose foreign income. It's the first courtroom test of the work of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is tasked with looking into Russia's efforts to interfere with the US election and whether the Trump presidential campaign colluded with Moscow to sway voters.

Paul Manafort told tax preparers on multiple occasions that he didn't control any foreign bank accounts. That's why the accounts weren't reported on years' worth of Manafort's tax returns as required by federal law, Ayliff said.

'Money's coming in fast, ' Manafort's lawyer, Thomas Zehnle, told jurors at the trial's beginning. And it underscored questions about how Manafort landed such a prime spot on Trump's campaign, where he served as a delegate manager and then as campaign chairman for five months in 2016, when his political consultancy business was essentially bankrupt.
