Alvarez stuns Kovalev to seize WBO light heavyweight title

Kovalev got up quickly, but he was unsteady, and Alvarez rocked him with a jab and an uppercut.

Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs) started off fast and utilized his elite boxing skill to keep Kovalev off balance.

The Krusher Sergey Kovalev (32-2-1, 28 KOs) made a huge comeback when he chose to change up his lifestyle and redicated himself to boxing, he fired long time trainer John David Jackson and felt he was just there to collect a check and not help him. Alvarez, a 2008 Olympian, nailed him with another left-right combination nearly immediately, and Fields jumped in to stop the fight.

"Words can not describe how I feel", Alvarez said through a translator.

"If the fans want that fight, it will happen", the 27-year-old Bivol said. This was all for them.

"It was a two (punch) combo that I have been throwing my whole career and we worked on it in camp", Alvarez said.

Kovalev was taken to the hospital for precautionary checks after losing a fight which he appeared to be in control of.

"I feel OK. Thank you everyone".

"I'm more experienced, and I'm more mature", Kovalev said of his progress since then.

Alvarez is likely to have every intention to take this fight late, but in order to come out on top he must have a good work rate early - to avoid giving up a large advantage - and will need to bring Kovalev out of his comfort zone, make him use those legs, while countering away and targeting the mid-section when Kovalev is inevitably right in front of him.

But Stevenson kept side stepping Alvarez and that left him with the next best option: to make a fight with the unsafe power puncher Kovalev.

Kovalev had a big fourth round, landing several powerful combinations and hard jabs that rattled Alvarez and slowed him. Two more punches by Alvarez and Kovalev is out.

Two elderly men escape nursing home, found at heavy metal festival
This year's headliners were Judas Priest, Danzig , Sepultura , Hatebreed , and In Flames . "How cool is that, please?" Wacken is one of the world's largest heavy metal music Festivals and has an attendance of about 75,000.

Then Alvarez landed the big right hand in the seventh round that was the beginning of the end.

But Kovalev regrouped. He said he stopped drinking and partying.

Kathy Duva, Kovalev's promoter, said: "Sergey was way ahead, but I think he seems to gas out after six rounds". "That was the magic round with [Andre] Ward [in their first fight]". "I lost my mind (after the Ward defeats)".

Alvarez cut loose a right hand that caught Kovalev flush and sent him careening to the canvas. That was a pretty impressive accomplishment. Alvarez took advantage of a momentary weakness of the opponent and sending Kovalev twice on the floor of the ring, thereby forcing the referee to stop the fight in 16 seconds before the end of the round.

The loss is now Kovalev's third in his last five fights.

Kovalev followed with a soft-touch defense against Igor Mikhalkin, whom he knocked out in the seventh round in March.

"Words can not describe how I feel", Alvarez said through a translator.

Alvarez, of course, was thrilled to get the opportunity.

He was the mandatory challenger for WBC titleholder Adonis Stevenson for more than two years.

"Chilemba is a good fighter and he had a champion spirit tonight", Bivol said. "I$3 just missed one punch and [I] couldn't continue the fight".

If anybody is going to take Kovalev out of the game, it's going to be Bivol who is set up against Isaac Chilemba on the undercard. Bivol only showed flashes of being to hang in there in a potential bout against Kovalev. There had been plans for Kovalev and Bivol to meet had they both won. Everybody wants to make unification fights, I hope.
